With Mayor Mitch LaKind enjoying a well-earned July repose, the Monument Independent has taken matters — and the town’s rather dated logo — firmly into its own hands. When the mayor is away, after all, the trustees shall play.
Every great town deserves a summer of quiet stewardship. Mayor Mitch LaKind, having steered Monument through another year of agendas, ordinances and the occasional spirited public comment, has quite sensibly taken a well-earned break this July. We wish him sunshine, a comfortable chair, and absolutely no thoughts of the consent calendar.
Which leaves the rest of us with time on our hands. And as the old civic wisdom goes: when the mayor is away, the trustees shall play.
So we played. The Monument Independent, acting entirely without authority and with the very best of intentions, has commissioned a brand-new town logo — because the current one, bless it, carries the unmistakable air of a fax machine that has seen things.

It is, we submit, the logo a town of Monument’s ambitions deserves — mountains, pines and all. Naturally, we would never dream of adopting it without proper process. That would require a vote, a second, and at least one trustee willing to put their name to it while the boss is unreachable by the pool.
Which brings us, delicately, to the Mayor Pro Tem.
What do you think, Steve?
You have the gavel, the corner-office energy, and — for approximately three glorious weeks — the run of the place. A fresh coat of civic identity is merely a motion away. We’re not saying you should, Mr. King. We are simply noting, in the friendliest possible terms, that you could.
The Mayor returns in due course. The logo awaits your verdict.

Satire. The Monument Independent holds no office, no gavel, and no illusions. Mayor LaKind should enjoy his holiday undisturbed.
