You are welcome to use The Monument Independent’s reporting. Neighbors, businesses, schools and other publications already do, and that is part of why we publish it. We ask two things in return: name us, and link to the article you used.

What you may do

  • Quote short passages from our articles.
  • Summarize our reporting or build on it in your own words, including on business websites, blogs and newsletters.
  • Use the facts, dates and figures we report. Most come from public records, and our articles say which.
  • Share links to our articles anywhere.

What we ask

Credit The Monument Independent by name, and link to the specific article you drew on rather than to our home page. A phrase such as “according to The Monument Independent,” with the link on our name or on the headline, is enough.

The link serves your readers too. We update articles when the news changes and correct them when we get something wrong, so a link takes readers to the current version. A copy made in September does not know what happened in October.

If you write with AI

The same applies when an AI tool drafts from our articles. Make sure the credit and the link survive into what you publish, and check the facts against the article first. AI tools often drop links, and they can get dates and numbers wrong.

What needs our permission

  • Republishing a full article, or most of one.
  • Our photographs, charts, maps and cards. Some images we run belong to others and appear under their license or with their permission; the caption says whose they are.
  • Letters to the editor and guest columns, which their writers own.
  • Using our name or logo in a way that suggests we endorse you, your business or a cause.

To ask, write to [email protected]. These guidelines are part of our Terms of Use.
