The Monument Fire District and the Town of Monument open the district’s Mitchell Avenue offices on Saturday morning for the area’s first Touch-a-Truck — three hours in which children are invited to climb on the fire engines, police vehicles and heavy equipment that normally pass them at speed. Admission is free, and so is the pancake breakfast.
The event runs from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Aug. 15, at the Monument Fire District’s administrative offices, 19775 Mitchell Avenue, according to the Town of Monument’s events calendar. The district lists it on its own homepage; the organizers’ flyer and the event announcement also name the Monument Police Department, whose patrol vehicles are among those on display.
The format needs little explanation. Fire trucks, police cars and heavy equipment are parked, switched off and opened up, and the people who operate them stand next to them answering questions. What is ordinarily glimpsed at speed, behind a windshield, becomes something a six-year-old can sit in. The organizers promise the chance to meet firefighters, police officers and other community partners alongside the vehicles.
Breakfast is being handled by the union. The firefighters of IAFF Local 4319, which represents the district’s professional firefighters, are serving free pancakes for the duration.
The host district is comparatively new in its present form. The agency traces its line to a volunteer department organized in 1949 and ran for years as the Tri-Lakes Monument Fire Protection District; it took its current name and boundaries in 2025, on completing a consolidation with the former Donald Wescott district.
